Prince William and Kate on Anglesey
Did you know that royal couple Prince William and Kate lived on Anglesey during the early 2010? In fact, for a three year period between 2010 and 2013, the pair shared a home together on the island while Prince William served as a search and rescue pilot in the RAF.
During this time, Prince William was stationed at RAF Valley and within a month of moving to the island, the pair announced their engagement. They chose their first official royal engagement as a royal couple to take place here when they dedicated a new lifeboat at the Trearddur Bay Lifeboat Station in February 2011.
Over this three year period, the pair sought to engrain themselves in the local community and the experience would ultimately go on to serve him well when it was made Prince of Wales following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.
The royals aren’t the only couple to have been won over by the beauty of the island, with countless families having chosen to become holiday home owners on Anglesey at our two luxury holiday parks. Afterall, if it is good enough for the royals, then surely it is good enough for everyone.
In this blog post, we retrace their steps, looking at the area in which they lived, the activities they enjoyed and the events they shared whilst living on the island.
Where Did William & Kate Live in Anglesey?
During his time stationed at RAF Valley, Prince William chose to live in Bodorgan Hall which was built in 1782 and remains the largest country house and estate on Anglesey. It is situated on the south west coast of the island just outside the village of Bodorgan which is just a half hour drive away from Silver Bay Holiday Park.
Prince William’s Anglesey house is owned by Lord and Lady Meyrick who are descended from Cadafael, Lord of Cedewain in Powys. It is rumoured that the pair rented the property for £750 per month during his period.
This stunning four bedroom farmhouse can sleep up to eight people and offers beautiful views of the nearby Newborough Forest and Llanddwyn Island. Just like Silver Bay, it even affords private access to a tranquil beach.
While Prince William completed his RAF duties, Kate worked from home for her parents company where she served as a website designer and photographer.
Kate & William’s Anglesey Pub & Amenities
The royal couple became surprisingly well ingrained in the local community, regularly frequenting the local shops and conveniences including the nearby Waitrose and Tesco stores without any of their usual entourage.
Rather unusually, the remote location ensured that the pair could roam freely without press attention and were generally left unperturbed by the local community who became rather accustomed to seeing the pair around the area.
This is of course one of the many benefits of residing on Anglesey, with the relaxed way of life and remote communities providing a real sense of peace and serenity. It is therefore unsurprising that the pair chose Anglesey at the location for their first home, with royal commentators claiming that the pair saw the island as a “refuge”.
In addition to the nearby shops, the pair even had a local pub that they were often spotted visiting. This pub was The White Eagle in Rhoscolyn which is located roughly a mile away from Silver Bay Holiday Park!
So if you become a holiday home owner at Silver Bay, you can opt to emulate the royal couple by making the White Eagle your local too. Here you will be able to enjoy premium draft beers, classy wines and traditional spirits whilst soaking the stunning Anglesey coastline with the pub being located just a stone’s throw away from Borth Wen Beach.
However, it is the food that is truly exceptional at the White Eagle. The proprietors source meat from an award winning local butcher and fish sourced by the Menai to ensure that their ingredients are as fresh and high quality as possible. This results in an eclectic menu made up of traditional gastro pub classics such as fish & chips and burgers, in addition to dishes aimed at the slightly more refined palette such as their fresh hake served in a creamy garlic sauce with new potatoes, peas and bacon.
