Activities on the Menai Strait
Our wonderful island of Anglesey is bursting with exciting experiences for visitors and owners at our parks. With over 130km of coastline, the water around the island has long been the playground of North Walians. And no area more so than the Menai Strait. The 16-mile stretch of water separating Anglesey from the mainland is brimming with exciting excursions and lined with beautiful places to visit.
So, to help you try something new and thrilling next time you stay with us, we’ve put together a number of recommendations along the Strait.
By Sea
One of the best ways to experience the Strait is by boat, with lots of trips available. RibRide is one such provider, offering speedy trips along the Strait, showing you all the sights, including the bridges, directed by knowledgeable guides.
Phil Scott owner of RibRide on their service: “We’ve been operating for 16 years and the experience has never become any less exciting. Due to the unique landscape, the history, stunning wildlife and having one of the highest tidal ranges in Britain, the experience is slightly different every year.
“Customers regularly feedback a number of things once their ride has finished; usually expressing their love of the wildlife on show, their excitement of the RibRide experience and their fascination with the stories and history we offer on the region and the two bridges during the trip.”

For those of you who like to get in the water, you may be interested in Plas Menai – The National Outdoor Centre. Situated on the mainland shore, close to Caernarfon, the amazing activity hub offers a huge range of experiences to get involved in. From Kayaking to paddle boarding, windsurfing to sailing and much more. The centre is currently closed for a major refurbishment until April, but activities can be pre-book for its reopening.
If you’d like to enjoy the Strait at a more gentle pace, then there’s plenty of other boat trip options, such as Seacoast Safaris. Setting sail from Beaumaris, on Anglesey’s south eastern point, this brilliant boat trip explores the wildlife of the region.
As well as taking in the beauty of the Menai Strait, you can experience grey seals, the Puffins of Puffin Island, dolphins and plenty more.
By Land
If you wish to experience the region without climbing aboard any boats, there’s plenty to do along the coast. Beaumaris itself is a beautiful town, featuring both a castle and a historic prison, Beaumaris Gaol. If you’re looking for more history but somewhere slightly bigger to explore, then there’s the cathedral city of Bangor on the mainland coast too.
Further west along the Strait there’s the stunning National Trust site of Plas Newydd House & Gardens as well as the Anglesey Sea Zoo. All in all, the Menai Strait offers more brilliant experiences for all the family to enjoy than you can shake a stick at.
So, next time you visit us at either of our sites, remember that the travel time to the Strait and it’s crossings is just a 30 minute drive from Rhoscolyn and a little over 20 minutes from Lligwy.
