There are 7 golf courses on Anglesey in total and there can be no question that some of these are amongst the very best in the UK, with challenging layouts which are complemented by stunning natural surroundings.

We have taken on the task of whittling these down to a definitive list of what we consider to be the top 5 best golf courses on Anglesey for the benefit of any golf enthusiasts who are planning on making a trip to the island over the coming months.

1. The Anglesey Golf Club, Rhosneigr

Perhaps rather fittingly, it is the Anglesey golf club which comes out on top. Based in Rhosneigr, this 18 hole links golf course offers a stern challenge to even the most experienced of golfers with its abundance of sand dunes and countless streams in what is an important conservation area.

Anglesey Golf Club can trace its origins back to 1914 and the double open champion Harold Hilton who was responsible for its creation. He certainly picked a prime location, with golfers able to enjoy stunning views of Snowdonia and the Llŷn Peninsula.

The quality of the course and the facilities on-site has resulted in Anglesey Golf Club regularly playing host to North Wales county championship matches. It is also open all year round, with the sandy soil drains ensuring that the course remains in peak condition whatever the weather.

2. Holyhead Golf Club, Holy Island

Dating back to 1912, Holyhead Golf Club was originally opened as a 9 hole course, but was later extended to a complete 18 hole configuration by none other than 5 times Open Championship winner James Braid.

Located on Holy Island, it is now a 6,090 par 71 course which retains some of old fashioned design characteristics with fairways that cross over at the 6th and 7th holes in what is a fairly compact configuration. It therefore offers players quite a challenge, exacerbated by the undulating fairways.

It isn’t just a treat for golf enthusiasts though, with stunning panoramic views offered from the elevated 10th hole. The on-site clubhouse is another highlight, with an eclectic range consisting of sensational breakfasts, light bites, stone baked pizzas and traditional pub grub.

3. Bull Bay Golf Club, Amlwch

Located less than 7 miles away from our Woodland Falls Holiday Park, Bull Bay Golf Club was opened way back in 1913 having been designed by renowned golf course architect William Herbert Fowler who was responsible for countless classics across the UK and USA including Walton Heath Golf Club.

Bull Bay Golf Club is unquestionably one of Fowlers’ best and it retains many of the classic features to this day with plenty of blind shots and holes where the green is above the eyeline as an approach is played. When it comes to what is in eyeline, the course also offers spectacular coastal views overlooking the Irish Sea.

All of this combines to make Bull Bay Golf Club a bit of a hidden gem on the island and well worth a visit for beginners and experienced players alike.

4. Storws Wen Golf Club, Brynteg

The top 9 hole golf course in Anglesey on our list is Stows Wen Golf Club in Brynteg. This club is also located close to Woodland Falls Holiday Park, being just four miles away and confirming our resort as being one which is primely positioned for any golf enthusiasts who are looking to purchase an Anglesey holiday home.

Stows Wen Golf Club is one of the more recent to have been constructed on the island, having first opened its doors in 1996. Although it is only 9 holes, it still presents golfers with the chance to play 18 hole forms from numerous tee positions. All configurations will present a challenge to players with numerous streams and lakes to take into consideration.

Another factor which reflects favourably on this course are the stunning views of both Snowdonia and Red Wharf Bay. This certainly makes things a little more bearable if you are having a bit of an off day with your golf on this challenging course.

5. Henllys Golf Club, Beaumaris

Just making it onto our top 5 list ahead of Baron Hill golf club (in what was quite a tough call) is Henllys Golf Club on the outskirts of the historic town of Beaumaris.

Overlooking the Menai Strait, this 18 hole golf course is set on the grounds of Henllys Hall, a former school which was run by Franciscans. This parkland course has a par of 71 and makes excellent use of the natural features on the land to create a challenge for golfers of all abilities. Such features include water hazards including a number of streams and ponds as is typical with most other Anglesey golf courses.

This course would have finished above Stows Wen Golf Club if it wasn’t for the relatively high green fee. However it does have an exceptional club house and restaurant, not to mention the challenge of the course which makes it a must visit for any golf enthusiasts visiting the island.
