Top 10 Best Places to Eat in Anglesey
Looking for great restaurants in Anglesey? Then you are in luck because there are plenty of them, with the island being home to a wide selection of exceptional bistros which cater for various tastes and dietary requirements.
Ahead of your next trip to the island, we’ve put together a top 10 list highlighting what we consider to be the top 10 best restaurants in Anglesey, providing a little information about each establishment so that you can decide which option is right for you. Let’s start off with the only Michelin star restaurant in Anglesey…
1. Sosban and The Old Butchers Restaurant – Menai Bridge
The 4 AA rosette awarded Sosban and The Old Butchers restaurant is the only Michelin star restaurant in Anglesey. The name was chosen based on the building in which the restaurant is based, occupying a former butchers in the Menai Bridge. With Welsh slate walls, hand painted animal tiles and sheepskin covered dining chairs, there are plenty of aesthetic clues to the building’s origins.
However, there are only eight of these chairs in the restaurant and the windows are covered. This helps to create a feeling of exclusivity which suits head chef Stephen Steven’s deliberately low profile persona. It is therefore just as well that the price of dining experiences start from £175 per person! This really is an Anglesey restaurant that is purely for foodies.
The menu consists of a range of unusual combinations using Welsh ingredients sourced from the local area. These unusual combinations ultimately highlight the chef’s mastery of cooking, with menu options such as the cod with fermented onion fudge being one of the standouts.
2. The Old Boathouse Restaurant – Red Wharf Bay
Now for something completely different in the form of a welcoming family friendly restaurant which has been owned and operated by the same family for over 50 years. Brothers Tomos and William are the great grandchildren of the original founder of this seafront restaurant in Anglesey which serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.
Diners can enjoy wonderful views overlooking Red Wharf Bay whilst dining on a menu made using fresh local produce. The seaside location ultimately means that there are a number of fish dishes on the menu, with their Fish Chowder being one of the highlights.
However, it isn’t all about fish with there being plenty of other options to choose from. There is even a dedicated plant menu for children, with this Anglesey restaurant making a big effort to support those with alternative dietary requirements.
3. Dylan’s Restaurant – Menai Bridge
Dylan’s Restaurant helps to ensure that there are two eateries in Menai Bridge which make up our list of the top restaurants in Anglesey. Since opening its doors in 2012 in a Grade II listed building on the Menai waterfront, Dylan’s has exploded in popularity with there now being four restaurants in their North Wales portfolio. The Menai Bridge restaurant remains the flagship, with guests able to enjoy stunning waterfront views whilst dining on a menu of dishes all made using locally sourced produce.
There is a rustic boatyard theme in the restaurant which hints at the building’s origins. It also means that there are plenty of fish dishes on the menu including fresh Menai mussels, calamari and even seabass tacos.
While there are plenty of fish dishes, the restaurant is equally as famed for its pizzas, pastas, burgers and steaks. There is also a separate child’s menu, hinting at the family friendly vibe that is on offer.
4. The Oyster Catcher Restaurant – Rhosneigr
Owned and operated by the Timpson family who are perhaps more famous for their key cutting skills, The Oyster Catcher Restaurant in Anglesey is one of four eateries in their portfolio and is located on the sand dunes of Rhosneigr, just a short distance from Broad Beach.
There are indoor and outdoor seating options at this ultra modern looking restaurant and even a choice of eating establishments. You can choose to dine in the main restaurant which is open from 12pm daily. This is another Anglesey restaurant to take full advantage of the wonderful local produce that is available, with mussels caught in Menai Bridge and a range of other wonderful fish dishes available including their exceptional black cod risotto and classic fish pie.
While there is a separate children’s menu available, the main Oyster Catcher Restaurant menu is more tailored towards those with a sophisticated pallet. If you would prefer more relaxed street food style courses, then you may prefer to head to Pat’s Shack which serves tasty stonebaked pizzas, chicken wings and loaded fries. Please be aware though that Pat’s Shack tends to only be open during peak season during periods of fair weather conditions.
5. Y Marram – Llanfairpwllgwyngyll
The only Anglesey restaurant to appear on the BBC’s Great British Menu programme is the Y Marram in Llanfairpwllgwyngyll. This is Ellis Barrie’s restaurant, with Barrie having been crowned the North West champion on the show in Series 13.
His previous Anglesey restaurant “The Marram Grass” closed on the back of the Covid-19 epidemic after 10 successful years in business. Run in conjunction with his brother Liam, their new establishment is centred around events with there being special guest chefs night organised featuring famous names such as Pip Lacey and Rosemary Shager.
The Barrie brothers serve their menu on a Friday and Saturday, with themed evenings including burger nights, fish & chips sittings and steak nights, each of which takes place in a relaxed, casual environment. There is also a Sunday lunch menu available during the autumn & winter months which is a must try for all lovers of a traditional roast dinner.
6. Sandy Mount Restaurant – Rhosneigr
Another seaside restaurant in Rhosneigr to choose from is Sandy Mount Restaurant. This one is situated more centrally in the village. The kitchen is run by Wayne Roberts who aims to deliver Welsh flavours with a traditional menu of comfort food.
That isn’t to say that there aren’t international dishes on the menu, with their Jerk spiced sweet potato and butter bean cassoulet being a popular option with vegetarians, vegans or those who have to stick to a gluten free diet.
7. The White Eagle Restaurant – Rhoscolyn
This one is located right on the doorstep of our holiday home owners at Silver Bay Holiday Park. The big standout here is the incredible views overlooking the beautiful Borth Wen Beach which can be enjoyed through the floor to ceiling window in the main restaurant or from the scenic outdoor terrace.
The White Eagle is part of the same group as the aforementioned Oyster Catcher, but their menu is completely different. However, the do stick to the same ethos of using local sourced ingredients including seafood sourced from Menai Bridge and meats obtained from a nearby award winning family butchers.
8. Harry’s Bistro – Beaumaris
If you want a truly sophisticated dining experience in a lavish venue then look no further than Harry’s Bistro in Beaumaris. This restaurant is located in Henllys Hall, a historic mansion built in the 1880s which forms part of the Henley’s Golf Club complex.
The menu here is very much based in Welsh traditions, with Welsh lamb and locally sourced steaks being some of the highlights on the seasonal menu. This isn’t really a family oriented restaurant, being far more suited to foodies or couples looking to celebrate special occasions.
9. The Sea Shanty Cafe – Trearddur Bay
Silver Bay Holiday Park is located roughly 4 miles away from the famous seaside resort of Trearddur Bay. Perhaps the most famous restaurant in the village is the seafront Sea Shanty Cafe. The original version of the restaurant closed in 2002 after more than 60 years in business. However, it remained engrained in public consciousness and a new version of the restaurant opened in 2016 in a larger premises with seafaring themed décor.
The cafe becomes incredibly popular during the summer months, particularly with daytime diners who are enjoying a traditional day out at the seaside. With ice creams, light bites, hearty main meals and an eclectic drinks menu, the Sea Shanty is the perfect restaurant on Anglesey for families for a relaxed dining environment with a seaside resort vibe.
10. Silver Bay Anglesey Restaurant
