Best Seafood Restaurants on Anglesey
With its miles of gorgeous coastline, it is little wonder that there are some many great seafood restaurants on Anglesey. In fact, it is really rather difficult to come up with a definitive list of recommendations given just how many great options there are on the island.
However, we have taken on the tough tasks of whittling it down to a list of 5 best recommended seafood restaurants on Anglesey so that you can arrive on the island with a clear picture of the best eateries to frequent during your time at our resorts.
1. The Lobster Pot – Church Bay
The Lobster Pot in Church Bay is one of the longest established seafood restaurants on Anglesey having been a family run operation since it first opened its doors in 1946. During this time it has established a reputation for serving the freshest shellfish which has been caught by local anglers. If you are a fan of crab, lobster, mussels, oysters or scallops, then The Lobster Pot is simply a must visit!
Alongside this they also serve more mainstream fish dishes including cod and mackerel. You’ll find that their menu changes regularly so as to ensure that they are serving the freshest possible fish.
The family vibe is very apparent at this welcoming eatery, which also serves a selection of meat and vegetarian dishes in case a member of your family isn’t quite as much of a seafood enthusiast as you are.
2. Dylan’s – Menai Bridge
Dylan’s is probably now the most famous seafood restaurant on Anglesey, with the brand having expanded to open a further three restaurants across Wales in addition to their original site in Menai Bridge.
It is hardly surprising that the company has had so much success given the exceptional quality of the food and the outstanding setting overlooking the Menai Strait. In fact, the Menai Bridge restaurant has actually been recommended in the Michelin guide.
All fish served here has been caught locally and there are a plethora of seafood options on the menu. This ranges from starters such as salt & pepper calamari, mains such as their sensational sea bass tacos and their Menai Strait Pizza which is topped with crab meat, prawns, mussels, chilli, basil, tomato and mozzarella.
3. The Old Boathouse – Red Wharf Bay
The Old Boathouse is a family old establishment which has been serving sensational food and drink to patrons for over 50 years. Backing onto Red Wharf Bay, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, The Old Boathouse is a fantastic place to soak up the fresh sea air and the stunning views overlooking the bay.
Acting as a breakfast serving cafe in the mornings and offering light bites at lunch, the eatery turns into a restaurant at 5pm each day and there are a wide variety of mouth-watching seafood dishes on the menu to choose from. For starters seafood fans have a choice of calamari or salt & pepper King Prawns, but it is the main menu which has the greatest breadth of choice when it comes to fish dishes. This includes their traditional fish & chips and fresh pan fried cod with roast potatoes, both of which are excellent.
However, the fish dishes that we would strongly recommend opting for are the Boathouse Fish pie which consists of hake, king prawns, smoked haddock & salmon topped with mash & mozzarella, or the Boathouse Fish Chowder which has mussels, king prawns, smoked haddock and chorizo. This is served with a welcome piece of fresh rustic bread to mop up the sauce.
4. Catch 22 Brasserie – Valley
The clue is in the name with this one; a stylish family run restaurant in Valley which offers a diverse range of fresh seafood dishes on its eclectic menu. Made up of fish and shellfish options, this is a seafood lover’s dream with everything from traditional fish & chips with battered haddock, through to grilled salmon and international dishes such as crispy Korean-style calamari.
Their specials menu changes daily based on the season and the fresh produce they have received from fishermen around the island. However, there are also plenty of options if you are dining with someone who isn’t partial to fish, with all of their meats also being sourced from local butchers. One particularly non-fish dish that is popular is their dry-aged Tomahawk rib-eye steak which certainly isn’t for the faint hearted.
The restaurant is pretty special from an aesthetic perspective too, with a rustic yet homely interior styling. Perhaps the only let down is the surrounding area, with Catch 22 not offering the same stunning coastal vistas as some of its rivals.
5. The Oyster Catcher – Rhosneigr
Like The Lobster Pot, The Oyster Catcher is part of the Flock Inns collection of gastropubs. However, both establishments have their own unique persona with there being very little overlap in terms of presentation. The only notable shared qualities of the establishments are a reputation for exceptional quality and a selection of fresh seafood dishes on the menu.
Headline dishes on The Oyster Catcher menu include the prawn cocktail starter, sensational fish pie or Sri Lankan king prawn curry for mains and their fresh oyster dish on the small bites menu which is served with tabasco and lemon.
The Oyster Catcher is also one of the most pet friendly restaurants on Anglesey, even having its own separate dog menu. There are fish dishes on this too, with pampered pooch able to dine on the Puppydelle which consists of spaghetti, tuna, peas & olive oil.
