Best Vegetarian Restaurants on Anglesey
Finding a good vegetarian restaurant is ordinarily no mean feat. Anglesey is no exception with there being just one eatery that is completely dedicated to offering vegan cuisine.
Luckily, there are plenty of other restaurants on the island which offer a wide selection of vegetarian dishes which are every bit as spectacular as other dishes on the menu.
We thought we’d ask the food fanatics on our team to come up with a list of the best vegetarian restaurants on Anglesey, taking into account the quality of the vegetarian dishes on their menu. Naturally, the only completely vegan restaurant on Anglesey comes out on top, but there are plenty of other vegetarian accommodating eateries to choose from. Here are our top 5…
1. The Green Olive – Menai Bridge
The Green Olive Cafe in Menai Bridge is the only all vegan restaurant on Anglesey, with the on-site team creating an array of vegan comfort foods made up of cooked breakfasts, warming soups, sandwiches, salads and sweet treats such as cakes, scones and pancakes.
Open from 9am till 4pm Friday to Tuesday, there are limited opportunities to dine there throughout the week and they only accept walk-ins. That means you have to be up bright and early if you are going to devour one of the exquisite breakfast dishes such as their banana pancakes, bacon jam on toast or the Green Olive Breakfast which consists of tofu bacon, vegan sausages, beans, black bean pudding, kale hash and sourdough toast. Diners can also opt for gluten-free toast too as the cafe makes a special effort to accommodate all dietary requirements.
The lunch time menu is equally as varied, but it is their homemade focaccia sandwiches which are the real highlight here. You can choose from fillings such as BBQ brisket Jackfruit, vegan sausages and roasted beetroot to name but a few.
While the restaurant is clearly aimed at vegans, the food on offer is highly recommended to all foodies who are looking for somewhere tasty to enjoy a spot of lunch while in the Menai Bridge area.
2. Catch 22 Brasserie – Valley
While the Catch 22 Brasserie isn’t solely marketed at vegan or vegetarian diners, it still makes it onto our list of the best vegetarian restaurants on Anglesey thanks to the fact that they do have their own vegan menu which features a variety of starters, mains and desserts. These dishes are every bit as spectacular as the meals on their main menu.
One of the best vegan mains has to be their roast mushroom linguini pasta which is served with pomodoro sauce, vegan parmesan cheese and chives. For pudding, make sure you leave room for their banana sticky toffee pudding which is a must try for anyone with a sweet tooth.
Catch 22 is of course also open for breakfast from 10:30 am till 2 pm Wednesday to Saturday each week. If you are looking for a vegetarian breakfast, you won’t find one better than their full veggie breakfast which comes with plant based sausages, hash browns, fried eggs, baked beans, tomatoes and sourdough toast.
3. Dylan’s – Menai Bridge
Since opening its Menai Bridge restaurant in 2012, Dylan’s has expanded rapidly with three additional eateries being opened across the North Wales region. The reason for their expansion is no doubt down to the exceptional quality cuisine that they have on offer, all of which is made using fresh local ingredients.
With the Menai Bridge restaurant occupying a harbour side position, it is therefore perhaps unsurprising to learn that there are plenty of fish dishes on the Dylan’s Menu. However, there are also a wide range of vegetarian options available too. This includes their mouthwatering halloumi burger and the ‘Walk in the Woods’ pizza which is topped with mushrooms, onions, goats cheese, mozzarella and truffle oil.
One drawback is that there is only one vegetarian option on the children’s menu, with their uninspiring linguine pasta in a tomato sauce not really being anything to write home about. However, most children will no doubt be won over by the range of vegetarian pudding options such as their sticky toffee pudding, churros and selection of tasty ice creams.
4. Zapatismo – Rhosneigr
While it technically isn’t a restaurant, Zapatismo is one of the best vegetarian takeaways on Anglesey. It is one of the few food truck businesses to open during the lockdown period which has managed to survive over the longer term. This is no doubt due to the enviable location just a short walk from Rhosneigr and of course the quality of the cuisine which is on offer, all of which is freshly prepared by head chef Rory O’Donnel.
Zapatismo’s Mexican street food inspired menu is updated regularly, but almost always consists of plenty of vegetarian options. Vegetarian dishes that are regularly included on the menu include various taco options and specials such as Frijoles Refrito which consists of refried pinto beans, red onions and salsa verde.
One word of warning though is that the opening hours do tend to vary quite wildly, being largely limited to weekends and holidays. Zapatismo is also not anchored to Rhosneigr, with Rory now starting to make an increasing number of appearances at large scale North Wales events on the back of his success. To stand the best chance of getting your hands on a takeaway from Zapatismo, we’d advise following them on Instagram.
5. Lastra Farm Restaurant & Bar
Back in 1979, Lastra Farm in Amlwch was transformed from a 17th century Welsh farmhouse into a restaurant which was fit for the 21st century. While the accommodation has continued to evolve over the subsequent decades it is the on-site restaurant which has truly gone on to make its mark on the Anglesey restaurant industry.
Open to hotel guests and members of the general public, Lastra Farm has developed a close working relationship with some of the island’s top artisan suppliers of vegetables, fruit, meats and alcoholic beverages to bring diners the best possible flavours of Anglesey. The restaurant team even utilise their own garden which is the source of all herbs utilised in the various dishes that are available.
While the menu does regularly change, there are almost always a healthy selection of vegetarian dishes to choose from. At the time of writing, this includes a sweet & sour squash, cranberry & red onion tagine or a sweet potato, spinach and chickpea curry which certainly has a bit of a kick to it.
