5 Ways to Keep Children Entertained This Summer in Anglesey

Posted: 20th May, 2015

The best childhood memories have their origins in summertime. Camping in the back garden, lapping up ice cream, and spending the long evenings in the company of family are memories we can all cherish.

But we know that little ones aren’t always easy to please, either.

So, if you’re taking a trip down to Anglesey this summer, then there are a host of wonderful activities to keep you and the little ones occupied. We’ve cherry-picked our favourite attractions – from rib riding to crab fishing – and we’re certain your little ones will love them too.

1. Crab fishing at Beaumaris Pier

Beaumaris Pier is famous for its stunning views and relaxed atmosphere. But it is also a haven for children who want to experience everything sun, sea, and sand related – including crab fishing.

In fact, Beaumaris Pier is perfectly suited for crabbing with its low railings and friendly atmosphere.

All you need to take part is:

  • String

  • Bait (bacon, chicken, or fish…)

  • Heavy object to keep the bait on the string

  • Children’s fishing net

Simply tie your bait to a piece of string and wrap the line around your finger. Then lower the string into the sea and wait until you feel the crab tug.

Once you’ve made contact with the crab, you can slowly begin to pull the string upwards without frightening the creature. Just before it reaches the surface you can use a fishing net to make sure you don’t lose the crab.

If you plan on keeping the crab, then make sure you have a bucket of salt water nearby. Children will love releasing the crabs back into the water later on – so keep a good eye on them in the mean time.

After all that’s done, finish off with an ice cream at Red Boat and enjoy the last of the day’s sunshine.

2. Anglesey Riding Centre

If not everyone in your brood loves the idea of crabbing, then perhaps some horse riding will be more up their street.

The Anglesey Riding Centre is perfect for little ones who want to experience some pony trekking, beach riding, or even one-on-one lessons. The classes are suited to every learner type, including beginners, so there’s no need for first-time nerves.

But what makes Tal y Foel really special, beyond the horses, is its stunning views across the Menai Straits. You will see Caernarfon Castle in all its glory, including little boats going to and fro across the bay.

This is a wonderful day out for children and adults alike.

3. Foel Farm Park

Foel Farm Park is one of our favourite attractions in Anglesey – especially if you’re travelling with the pitter patter of tiny feet.

A real working farm, Foel Farm Park gives children the opportunity to experience first-hand what it’s like to live and work with agricultural animals. There’s plenty of chances to get up close and personal with the animals too, like piglets, sheep, and more horses.

Foel Farm Park also has a lovely onsite cafe and gift shop, offering a welcome chance for parents to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery. On a sunny day, the outdoor terrace boasts views to Menai Strait and Snowdonia.

We definitely recommend you set aside an afternoon for this lovely attraction.

4. Pili Palas Nature World

Sticking with the animal theme, there is one last warm and fuzzy site you have to visit in Anglesey.

This fun-loving nature world has every kind of creature you could imagine, from meerkats to llamas. There are also a number of daily activities that children can take part in – such as:

  • Meet the Snake

  • Lizard Land

  • Bugs (including stick insects and millipedes)

  • Pets (rabbits or guinea pigs)

You can even be a zookeeper for the day, if you fancy.

5. Rib Ride

Last, but certainly not least, any family traveling to Anglesey has to experience Rib Ride.

This has been routinely voted the best thing to do on our island, and it’s not hard to see why.

Travelling on one of their high speed boasts, tourists will be given the chance to whip under Britannia Bridge and see Anglesey’s famous shipwrecks, whirlpools, and stunning coastline.

You will also get the chance to see ‘Millionaires Row’, before travelling past Caernarfon Castle and Fort Belan.

Expect to learn everything there is to know about Anglesey and this island’s rich cultural heritage in the most heart-thumping way possible.

There’s a reason why Rib Ride is so popular.
