Wild Swimming in Anglesey

Wild Swimming in Anglesey

Posted: 7th March, 2024

Wild swimming is the new craze that is sweeping across the country, with an increasing number of people choosing to brave the elements in all seasons, even during the winter months.

For the benefit of the uninitiated, wild swimming is simply outdoor swimming in a pool of water. This could be a river, lake or even the sea. While the prospect of entering the cold water may seem a little daunting at first, you will find that your body quickly adapts to the temperature. The average Anglesey sea temperature across the year is approximately 12 degrees, with a low of 6.8 degrees in January and a high of 17.8 degrees in August. By the summer months, you may therefore even start to feel warm once you start swimming around.

Wild swimming is a great way to keep in shape and connect with Mother Nature. There is even evidence that entering cold water is good for your health as it forces your body to go into survival mode. While this might sound bad, it actually increases blood circulation around your body which results in freshly oxygenated blood being delivered to areas of the body that are in need of recovery. This is a great way of addressing stubborn aches and pains in your muscles, particularly if they are strained on account of exercise.

Best Anglesey Wild Swimming Locations

You will find that there are plenty of fantastic Anglesey wild swimming locations just waiting to be explored should you decide to partake in this increasingly popular activity. In fact, there are two such destinations right on the doorstep of our two Anglesey holiday parks.

We’ve put a list together of some of the best Anglesey wild swimming locations for you to take into consideration the next time that you are holidaying on the island:

1. Silver Bay Beach

If you are lucky enough to own a holiday home at Silver Bay Holiday Park, then you will find that you will have one of the very best beaches in North Wales for swimming right on your doorstep.

Silver Bay beach is directly accessible from our holiday park and has recently been named one of the cleanest beaches in North Wales. It has also received a green coast award which is given to beaches which are deemed to have excellent water quality and high environmental standards. This makes it ideal for a quick dip should you decide to take up the hobby.

2. Lligwy Beach

Our Woodland Falls Holiday Park meanwhile is just a short walk away from Lligwy beach and was recently voted the number 1 beach in Wales by the Sunday Times.

As with Silver Bay, it has also picked up a Green Coast Award on account of its excellent water quality & high environmental standards. You can therefore take to the waters safe in the knowledge that you are entering one of the cleanest areas of coastline in the country.

3. Llanddwyn Island

Llanddwyn Island is a stunning island just off the west coast of Anglesey which can only be accessed on foot. You can make your way there through Newborough Warren National Reserve which will provide you with exceptional views on your short walk.

Once you reach the beach you will find that there are secluded rock coves and low tide pools which are the perfect place to chill out once you have acclimated to the temperature. Just make sure that you don’t stray too far from the shore, as a strong current tends to pick up rather quickly.

4. Trearddur Bay

Trearddur Bay is one of the most popular beach holiday destinations on the island and it also happens to be one of the best swimming beaches on Anglesey too on account of the calm waters and sandy beach.

Sat alongside Trearddur Bay is the excellent Sea Shanty Cafe which opens from 11:30am throughout the week. Here you can grab a warming cup of tea or hot meal as a reward for braving the cold waters. Might be best to avoid the ice cream though.

5. Rhosneigr Beach

Just making it into our top 5 is Rhosneigr beach which is located just 13 miles away from our Silver Bay Holiday Park.

This is a truly beautiful sandy beach which affords superb views of Snowdonia mountain. Once you take to the waters you will find that you can swim a fair way out before finding the water is too deep for you to be able to stand. The sheltered location also ensures that the currents do not get too strong, making it the perfect wild swimming beach on Anglesey for beginners.
